Surprise Reversal: America Discovers Columbus!

Christopher Columbus may be credited with discovering America, however, this week America discovered Columbus.  Folks all around the U.S. learned Columbus, Ohio had set both local and national records for Earth Day volunteerism during the Green Columbus Earth Day 2009 Picture This event Saturday.  2,605 volunteers reported to 70 worksites around the city and spent 9,132 hours planting trees, cleaning up litter, removing non-native species, establishing vegetable gardens, and otherwise beautifying their communities.  Though our population isn’t comparable, we topped efforts in larger cities like Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.  So, pick up your $10 PictureThis 2009* organic t-shirt (eco-screened by local American Canvas), pat yourself on the back then, head out to one of the many Earth Week events throughout our city.

Earth Day Network Selects Columbus Earth Day as Featured Event

Columbus, Ohio – February 19, 2009 – Earth Day Network has selected Columbus ‘Picture This’ Earth Day as a featured event for 2009.  Annually, Earth Day Network selects established, outstanding Earth Day events to support with targeted communications and other resources.  Columbus is among an elite group of cities worldwide selected for this honor.  Others include Tokyo and Buenos Aires.

Earth Day 2009: Picture This is the third annual event organized by Green Columbus.  According to Tad Dritz, Director of Green Columbus, the name was selected “to encourage central Ohioans to picture how much can be accomplished in one day of volunteer projects across the Columbus metro area.”  The planned event is actually a two day affair with April 18 for volunteer worksites and April 19 for a celebration at Goodale Park, in the Short North.

Information about the event, including sponsorship, worksite and boothing opportunities can be found at www.picturethis09.org.

Governor Tapped to Drop Bottled Water

Over the past two years, Corporate Accountability International has catalyzed dozens of mayors to phase out bottled water use because of its social and environmental impacts. Now, Corporate Accountability International and the tens of thousands of people who have joined the campaign are asking governors to Think Outside the Bottle and prioritize public water systems. Not only would canceling bottled water contracts save the state hundreds of thousands of dollars, it would send the message that our most essential public resource cannot be made subject to the same corporate greed and market forces that have imperiled our economy.

On Wednesday February 18th at 11 AM, join Tip Top owner Liz Lessner, Rebecca Tollefson of the Ohio Council of Churches, and pediatrician Wendy Anderson, for a special “Think Outside the Bottle” event at Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails.  For more information, please call (614) 221-8300.
